New Georgia Railroad

From 1986 to 1993, the State of Georgia ran steam and vintage diesel excursions as the New Georgia Railroad. Operating from Zero Milepost in Underground Atlanta, the New Georgia offered regular Atlanta trips and operated occasional excursions throughout Georgia.

S&A 750 Clarkston, GAExcursions were led by ex-Atlanta & West Point Pacific 290 and ex-Savannah & Atlanta Pacific 750, leased from the Atlanta Chapter, NRHS. When steam was not available, ex-Southern Railway E8 6901, lettered for the New Georgia in a Central of Georgia-inspired paint scheme, headed the excursions. A pair of ex-Southern FP7's lent a hand as needed.

New Georgia 6901 Atlanta, GaAtlanta trips were over CSX predecessor lines. An 18 mile circle trip around Atlanta ran east on the ex-Georgia Railroad mainline past Hulsey Yard and the New Georgia's shops at the ex-Pullman facility to Kirkwood Junction, then over ex-Seaboard tracks north to Belt Junction and west to Howell Junction, and finally south on ex-Western & Atlantic (NC&StL) tracks to downtown Atlanta and Zero Milepost.

S&A 750 Stone Mountain ParkAtlanta-Stone Mountain trips ran east to Stone Mountain over the ex-Georgia Railroad mainline, over a new connection to the Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad, around the base of Stone Mountain, then back to downtown Atlanta. Before the connection was added in 1988, the eastbound trip ended at Stone Mountain, with a diesel attached to the end of the eastbound train pulling it back to Atlanta.

Before the New Georgia shut down in 1993, S&A 750 was the subject of a video by Green Frog Productions. E8 6901 and both steam locomotives are on display at the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, GA.
