- The Atlantic & Western
Railway operates freight and switching
services in Sanford and Jonesboro, NC,
3.5 miles, and an ex-Southern Railway
line from Sanford to Gulf, NC, 13 miles.
It connects with CSX at Sanford and
Norfolk Southern and the Aberdeen,
Carolina & Western at Gulf. The
Atlantic & Western is controlled by Rail Management Corporation
(RMC) of Panama City, FL.

Atlantic & Western
motive power consists of two SW1200's provided by
Rail Switching Service, an affiliate of AT&W
parent RMC. On June 20, 2001 RSS 1219 brings a
single UPFE insulated boxcar north from
AT&W's yard along Chatham Street in Sanford.

RSS 1219 has cleared the ex-SAL CSX
Hamlet-Raleigh line in downtown Sanford and

AT&W 100 and 101, both GE 70-ton
switchers, are no longer in active service. The
units are stored behind AT&W headquarters.
